This error which some people have reported seems to happen mostly if you run a widescreen monitor. I believe the problem has been fixed since the demo was put together so it will work in the full version of the game.I actually got the error on my own machine when I installed the demo and I've found I think two work arounds on my own machine to fix it.1.) Delete the file NewProfile.xml in your /Age of Empires 3 Trial/Users/NewProfile.xml directory.1A.) Set your screen resolution to 1024x768, then rerun the game.or.2.) Open NewProfile.xml and fine the line that specifies the optiongrfxres and change the res to say 1024x768. In my particular case it was initializing to 1280x768, which my machine did not like much. For some reason it initializes to a resolution some video cards have problems with if you have a widescreen monitor (I have the 24' widescreen at home and had this problem)It seems to only happen the first time you run the game, I believe once you get it up and running once, it doesn't happen again.Hope this helps, it worked for me.P.S. Please reply if this worked for you. It seems about half the help threads are about this issue. I've tried doing both of things, well at least tried because I only had a DefaultProfile and no userprofile.xmlI am not sure though if this is the same problem that I am having, were trying to run the game I get a small window that pops up in the middle of the screen with only an OK button and a red circle with a white X in the middle of it. The window isn't titled and says nothing in it.

All I can do is close it. I've tried looking to see if creates a log when I try to do this but alas it doesn't.Anyone know how to fix this? Hello guys,I am not sure if this is applicable here but I'll try anyway. My computer seems to display the game a bit incorrectly. The game runs but the graphics (even when set on high) seem off.My VoodooPC is as follows:Athlon 64 3000ATI Radeon X800 XT PE1 Gig RAMI don't know how to post a picture so I guess I will just have to describe it.

Everything looks sort of Age of Empires II in terms of graphics except for the water. There seems to be no depth to the textures. They lack the right colors as well. Not sure if this will help solve my problem. If you know how to post a picture then please tell me so I can get this problem solved quicker. Thanks in advance. To clarify, this is for the error where it actually tells you your d3d initialization failed, followed by some possible causes. There's another problem people are apparently having where an error box pops up with no text in it at all. I'm not sure what that one is unfortunately. This is pretty unforgiveble ES, after waiting so long you releash a bug filled thing you cant even start.

Are you telling me you didnt actuly try to run the demo on more than one config before releasing it?? That seems to me the only way you could miss an error where the game cannot even load! This message has been edited by darknessoffate (edited @ 02:13 PM).
