17 here uses all Maxxforce powered trucks and I see them broke down lots.Is it all just emissions related failures? Or more to it? They look good on paper.design, material and power curve wise. What can owners/drivers tell me about them? There are some smoking deals on them on the lots because they aren't selling.

Like this Paystar that is basically the same as my old 2005 5600i.black on black, Diamond Line box. But my old one had a CAT.This one is down to the price I paid in 2005.Would they be any good after a trip to Diesel Spec to get deleted??

This is the engine that nearly bankrupted Navistar a year or two ago. They were that bad. Much of this has been blamed on their use of Massive EGR; they've since gone to SCR. I haven't heard anything about the SCR engines - they've only been around for a year or so. To my mind, they are still an unknown quantity. (If I had a small operation I wouldn't touch them.)I drove a 2011 massive EGR model for 4 months or so.

May 11, 2017 - The International Maxxforce engine break is optional for both Maxxforce 11 and 13 engine displacements. The engine brake is a compression.

It was new, so I didn't have any problems with it. I found it to be quiet and reasonably powerful. Pretty much like anyone's 13L. It handled 80k well. The only downside at the time was the lackluster engine brake. It was unnoticeable until 15-1600rpm.

So you had to downshift at the top of every hill and run it up around 2000rpm. It worked alright then. The engine brake on an ISX by comparison, could handle the same descent in top gear.Recently I drove a couple of Prostar rentals. When moderately loaded the MF-13 felt like any other 13L.

When I pulled 125,000lbs, it felt a bit undergunned. Now I don't know what the power was set at. As I recall the sticker said something around 475hp/1700lbs torque. (It could have been 450.) The engine felt noticeably less powerful than our DD15's (500hp, either 1650 or 1850 torque) or our 505c Mack MP8's (505hp/1850lb).i hope this helps. The Maxxforce 13 EGR's definitely had their share of issues but I know after all changes and recalls done they run better now. Problem is perception and customer's reached their breaking point after so much initial downtime.

Thus the lawsuits and the residual value tanked. There were component changes to the EGR system that took failures way down. The new N13 (SCR) have been doing extremely well, in my hometown Service Transport recently bought 40 and they are beating Volvo, Pete & Mack on fuel economy all automatic fleet. Recent orders that I know of PAM 300 N13 / Central 450 N13 / MVT 500 N13 big chunk with Allison Trans / TSI 50 N13.Since Navistar reversed the course and went SCR in 2012 they have sold 22k Cummins ISX and 12k N13 engines. It's going to take a while to stick but the N13's have had literally zero engine related failures. It's ironic because the EGR version stumbled so hard but the N13 is proving to be bulletproof.
